The Community Rugby section of the Connacht Branch recently ran Tag Rugby Extravaganzas for national school children in Sligo, Athlone and Galway. Almost 1,000 kids from all across the province attended the three extravaganzas.
Each school is allocated a nation when they enter, the idea being that the children spend the weeks leading up to the tournament researching that nation and they arrive on the day in full national dress!
The schools then undertake a ‘nations parade’ where they complete a lap of the pitches whilst performing the various war dances, hakas and songs of their chosen nation.
That is all followed by a series of inter-school Tag rugby games where the children get to show off their rugby skills. All games are played in line with the IRFU’s Long Term Player Development strategy, therefore semi-finals and finals are not played – each school simply plays a series of games.
Connacht Rugby would like to extend sincere gratitude to all the children who enthusiastically took part and to the teachers for their incredible efforts in both coaching the children and getting them prepared for the nations parade.
