Buccaneers Donate To Drugs Awareness Group
For over ten years alcohol-free youth discos have been held regularly in Athlone’s rugby club. These hugely popular, supervised discos are run in a three-way partnership involving Buccaneers RFC, the Athlone Gardai and the Athlone Drugs Awareness Group.
These discos have proved immensely successful and are eagerly awaited by the young teenagers of Athlone and its environs and Buccaneers RFC President Ray Duffy recently made a financial donation on behalf of the club to the Athlone Drugs Awareness Group.
He said: “The rugby club is delighted to be associated with these discos. I would like to compliment the three organisations on their co-operation in staging these discos so smoothly whilst also providing a greatly needed facility for the youth of the area.”
He also thanked Seamus Hayes and his staff at Musicworld who have been most obliging in selling tickets for these regular discos.
Westmeath County Councillor Frankie Keena accepted the donation on behalf of the Athlone Drugs Awareness Group. He thanked Buccaneers RFC for its generosity and assured the members that ‘the funds will be put to very good use on drugs awareness activities.’
“The success of these regular discos is primarily due to the fact that the discos are tightly run and well supervised,” he added.
“The safety and enjoyment of everyone attending them is of paramount importance. The parents of anyone with alcohol on them, or acting in a way that is a concern to others, are contacted to bring them home.”
Athlone Town Councillor James Henson is also very involved with the Athlone Drugs Awareness Group and he urged more parents to get involved in the voluntary assistance at these discos which are run more or less on a monthly basis.
Supervision is required both inside at the disco and outside the premises also. The more volunteers who can help, the easier it is to stage these events. There is always room for more help and it is generally a short night, with doors opening shortly before 9pm and the music finished by midnight.
The next youth disco is scheduled for May, when no under-15’s will be admitted, and admission will be strictly by ticket only.
