UCC Add More Silverware

The UCC Under-21s have had a sterling season and picked up some serious silverware along the way. They have now added the Under-21 South Munster Cup to their J2 Cup and U-21 All-Ireland title.

The UCC Under-21s, under the captaincy of Ireland Under-19/Under-20 development player Kevin O’Byrne, lifted the U-21 South Munster Cup for the seventh successive year last Sunday at Musgrave Park, beating Waterpark 49-5.

Two tries each from full-back Gavin Nugent and hooker O’Byrne, plus one each from Conail Murphy, Kevin Kidney and Graham Mackessy, plus four conversions and a two penalty kicks from Kidney, brought the cup back to UCC.

This is the third trophy the UCC U-21 side have won this season when adding the Waterpark Ellickson/Kavanagh trophy back in October and the coveted Fraser McMullen All Ireland Under-21 title (for a fifth time – 1997, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010).

A chance to add yet another title slipped by when UCC lost the final of the Under-21 Intervarsity Conroy Cup to UCD back in October in Cork, losing 15-11 to the Dublin side.

Last week the UCC J2s won their third successive Cup title when they beat Cobh 14-13 at Musgrave Park.
