First Senior Match For Abbeyfeale Women
The Abbeyfeale senior Women’s squad recently took to their home pitch for their inaugural competitive match in the Munster League against Fermoy.
The Abbeyfeale side, which was only assembled around two months ago, faced tough opposition from a strong and experienced Fermoy outfit.
Support for the hosts was evident with many well-wishers lined up on the sidelines ready to cheer on the local ladies.
Abbeyfeale got off to a nervy start, conceding three tries in the opening quarter. But they soon found their feet and fought back well.
The defence from both sides was impressive with set pieces also well executed. Towards the end of the first half, Fermoy broke the line once again to give themselves a half-time advantage of 20-0.
The second half saw Abbeyfeale grow in confidence, wtih Corina O’Connell going over for their first try to send the Abbeyfeale fans into a frenzy.
In a controversial decision, O’Connell’s effort was ruled out for a foot in touch. However, Abbeyfeale’s Lorraine Scanlon immediately scored a legitimate try which Bridget Cahill failed to convert.
Abbeyfeale never gave up and fought on, to their immense credit. Their hard work was rewarded when Scanlon went over for her second score. Unfortunately, Cahill was narrowly off target with her conversion attempt.
The belief was starting to set in but time was against the home sid. Fermoy broke the line in the last few minutes, giving them their fifth try and a winning margin of 27-10.
