The IRFU ‘Play Rugby’ programme is being rolled out across schools in all four provinces. Ray Gadsden, Community Rugby Officer in Munster, was in Presentation Monastery National School in Killarney recently and got a great reception from teachers and kids alike.
Munster Rugby’s Ray Gadsden has been working with all the teachers and classes on the Play Rugby initiative, and they are now running their own rugby programme in Presentation Monastery National School.
The Killarney school has always been supportive of sporting initiatives and were one of the first schools in Kerry that brought rugby into school under the previous YDO scheme.
They won a Munster National School Tag rugby blitz back in 2001 – not bad for a school that only taken on rugby – and were awarded Best Skills at the same blitz in 2006.
This season saw two players from the school selected on the Munster Youths squad, with one going forward to the Ireland Under-18 Clubs squad.
It is hoped that Play Rugby will encourage more youngsters in Killarney to experience and enjoy rugby.
