Students from Limerick Institute of Technology and an army of volunteers are organising a World Record attempt for the most people doing the Haka in Limerick next Saturday afternoon ahead of the big Munster v Leinster Magners League clash.
The second year students of LIT are organising a charity event to break a Guinness World Record.
‘Limerick’s Largest Haka’, on the steps of City Hall, will take place before the much-anticipated Munster v Leinster Magners League showdown.
Currently endorsement has been achieved from Shannon Development, Limerick City Council, I Love Limerick’s Richard Lynch and Limerick Communication Office.
Peter Clohessy, one of Limerick’s international sport stars and proprietor of the Sin Bin, has given the event his full support. The event will also celebrate Limerick’s status as the European City of Sport for 2011.
The Haka is a traditional Maori dance made famous in the sport of rugby by the New Zealand team. The event will take place next Saturday April 2), and gates open at 3.30pm at Merchant’s Quay in Limerick.
The organisers hope to reach the goal of over 4,000 participants performing the Haka.
Spokesperson Sarah McLoughlin said: “On the day we would love if all participating schools and clubs would wear their school and club jerseys to represent their local communities and add a unique experience to your day.”
All proceeds from the record-breaking attempt and event will be donated to Barnardos Limerick, an Irish charity with a unique vision ‘where childhood is valued and all children and young people are cherished equally.’
The event will kick off at 5pm but gates will be open at 3:30pm for registration, an instructional video will be shown for a short period which will teach the audience the Maori dance.
There will be some words from the Mayor, some music and some dance groups performing.
