Heineken Cup Final Set For Saturday, May 19

The 17th Heineken Cup final will be played at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, May, 19, 2012, it has been confirmed.

Derek McGrath, the ERC Chief Executive, announced on Monday that for the fifth successive season European club rugby’s showpiece match will be played on a Saturday.

The date was revealed at the UK launch of the 2011/12 tournament at Twickenham. Over 16,500 tickets had been snapped up for the match over six months ahead of the final returning to the London venue for the fourth time.

The previous three finals have all been won by English clubs – Northampton Saints in 2000 and London Wasps in both 2004 and 2007 – and there will be seven Aviva Premiership sides bidding to maintain that trend in late May.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that, as per last season, the final of the Amlin Challenge Cup will also be played in London over the same weekend of May 18/19/20.
