President Higgins Celebrates Galwegians’ 90th Year

A crowd of over 600 members of Galwegians RFC, both past and present, joined with friends and special guests to attend a memorable event at the Great Galwegians Gathering 90th Anniversary Celebration in the Galway Radisson Blu Hotel on St. Patrick’s Night.

Galwegians’ guest of honour was President Michael D Higgins, who praised the club for its rich heritage and significant contribution to Irish rugby both on and off the field.

In addition to providing ten full internationals over the years, the President commented on the six IRFU Presidents which the club has provided, a record number for an Irish rugby club.

He also wished current Vice President and lifelong Galwegians member Billy Glynn well when he assumes the IRFU presidency at the end of this season.

In welcoming President Higgins and other guests, Galwegians President Noel Leader symbolically named all fifteen members of the first ever Galwegians team, and noted that some of the children and grandchildren of those players were present at the event.

Guest speaker was John Killeen, General Manager of COLD CHON and Chairman of Let’s Do It Global, the organising committee for the forthcoming VOLVO Ocean Race which has its final leg in Galway in July.
