Munster Sign South African Stander

Munster have completed their squad for the coming season with the news that they have signed former South Africa Schools and Under-20 back rower CJ Stander.

In this his first season playing Super 15 rugby, CJ Stander has played 13 times and scored four tries for the Bulls who lie fifth in the overall table after finishing second in the South African Super 15 Conference.

A former captain of South Africa Schools and Under-20s, he will join Munster on a two-year contract – subject to being granted a work permit and passing the requisite fitness test – once his commitment to the Bulls in the Super 15 and Currie Cup has ended.

Commenting on the 22-year-old’s decision to move to Ireland, Bulls head coach Frans Ludeke said: “Quality players like CJ, who have also shown tremendous leadership abilities, don’t come around very often and so it was not a surprise to hear about his overseas offer.”

The player himself expressed his delight at the move, stating: “I felt honoured and privileged when Munster approached me and indicated that I am viewed as a player with the potential to represent Munster.

“I spent countless hours on their website to learn more about Munster’s history, traditions and community involvement. It goes without saying that I am aware that Munster is a giant in world rugby.

“I know though that I will join an institution that is much bigger than just being a rugby club and look forward to be a contributing member of the team and to earn the respect of my future team-mates and Munster supporters if selected.”

Stander’s next engagement for the Bulls is against the Cheetahs on Saturday, June 30 and he will be involved with the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup and join Munster immediately after the conclusion of that competition.
