Due to phenomenal demand for tickets ahead of Saturday’s Heineken Cup Pool 3 match between Connacht and Harlequins, a decision has been made to increase the capacity of the Sportsground.
Over the last few days, ticket sales for Connacht v Harlequins have surpassed the 7,500 mark and are closing in on 8,000. In order to accommodate the extra demand, terraces behind each goal post will be erected in the morning.
It is expected that just under 9,000 supporters will descend on the Sportsground for the 6pm kick-off.
Excitement has been building all week in Galway and throughout the province as Connacht prepare to welcome back Conor O’Shea’s side for what promises to be one of the most exciting games of the season.
Connacht Rugby head of marketing Alex Saul expects the fixture tomorrow evening to be a season highlight, stating: “The phone has been ringing all week as Heineken Cup fever has really taken hold in the province.
“We expect to have the second biggest attendance for a Connacht Rugby fixture, second only to Toulouse (last season).
“There has been fantastic support at the Sportsground for the last three home games and the players truly value the ability of the crowd to drive them on.”
John Muldoon talked during the week about the importance of the home crowd. “I remember playing to a crowd of 200-300 a few years ago so the fact that we’ll have over 8,000 supporters in the ground is testament to how far we’ve come,” said the back rower.
“It’s an amazing feeling to run out through the Clan Terrace out to a packed stadium and we can’t wait for that again tomorrow.”
The Clan Terrance and Main Stand are now sold out but there are some tickets remaining behind the goal posts, with a very limited number of children’s tickets available. All children must have a ticket and these are priced at €;10.
Tickets will be available at the ticket booth on College Road from 10am tomorrow morning so to avoid disappointment, get down early.
