Elite Scrum Coaching Course

The scrum is an integral part of rugby and while the ‘dark arts’ of scrummaging may be a mystery to some, the IRFU have introduced an Elite Scrum Coach Seminar for coaches working at an elite level.

The objective of the programme is twofold:

– To identify, educate and develop indigenous elite scrum coaches to work in the Elite Player Development pathway and Provincial Academies

– To develop player’s technical, tactical and strategic scrum knowledge, understanding and ability for effective elite scrummaging

This was the first of two weekends of the National Elite Scrum Coaching Course. The following modules were delivered which included practical elements with elite players being provided by Leinster and Munster. 

Speaking about the event, Colin McEntee, IRFU high performance manager, said: “This is about developing elite scrum coaches throughout the game so we can create a culture of scrummaging at a very high technical level.”

The attendees from the four provinces included: Mike Ruddock, Marcus Horan, Conor Twomey, Peter Malone, Ultan O’Callaghan, Darragh Hurley, Colm McMahon, Bryan Young, Peter Bracken, Adrain Flavin, Davy Henshaw, Ambrose Conboy, John Fogarty, Seamus Twomey, Philip Horan, Derek Dowling, Peter Bruce and John Campbell.

The next weekend is August 9-11.
