Leinster Rugby’s strength and conditioning department is launching its inaugural ‘Elite Performance’ Conference on Saturday, October 26 in the RDS.
Tickets for the event will include entrance to the Leinster v Connacht provincial derby that evening. The Elite Performance Conference will be a mix of theoretical and practical presentations from the senior and academy strength and conditioning, rehabilitation and nutrition experts at the province.
Topics that will be covered include:
– Bridging the Injury Gap: Effective Decision Making in the Rehabilitation Process
– Nutrition Strategies for Success in Team Sports
– Matching Game Demands with Conditioning Strategies in Team Sports
– Maximising Power Performance through the use of Plyometric Training
There will also be practical presentations on strength & power methods, rehabilitation practices and types of conditioning typically performed by the professional players at Leinster.
The speakers will include Daniel Tobin (head of fitness), Johnny Claxton (senior strength & conditioning coach), Daniel Davey (performance nutritionist) and Stephen Smith (head of rehabilitation).
DANIEL TOBIN
Daniel is currently the head of fitness at Leinster Rugby having been at the province since 2006. His main responsibilities include the strength, power and speed development of senior players.
He also spent a number of years working with the Dublin senior Gaelic football squad as a strength and conditioning coach. He has represented Ireland in athletics internationally over 400 metres at all levels.
He completed an undergraduate degree in Sports Science and Health from Dublin City University in 2006 and subsequently a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Nutrition.
He has recently completed his MSc by research in University College Dublin on plyometric training in professional rugby union players.
DANIEL DAVEY
Daniel is the performance nutritionist with Leinster Rugby since January 2013. He received his BSc in Science from University College Dublin and holds an MSc in Nutrition, Physical Activity & Public Health from the University of Bristol.
Daniel is also a certified strength & conditioning specialist (C.S.C.S) with the NSCA, and has completed the national qualification in Exercise and Health Studies.
His primary role is developing individualised nutrition strategies for players to achieve specific performance related goals that include, increasing lean mass, maximising strength, power, speed and aerobic fitness.
He also believes that enhancing athletes’ understanding of appropriate nutrition practices is vitally important for long-term optimum health outside of sport.
Daniel represented Sligo at every inter-county representative level. He has also worked with the Dublin senior Gaelic football and hurling panels.
JOHNNY CLAXTON
Johnny is currently the senior strength & conditioning coach at Leinster Rugby with primary responsibility for the senior squad conditioning and rugby integration programme.
He has vast experience working in high-performance sport with his most recent roles involving senior positions with Auckland (NPC/ITM Cup), Blues (Super Rugby) and New Zealand (All Blacks Sevens) rugby.
He has several undergraduate qualifications as well as a Masters degree in sports science including several publications. He has also lectured at University level while consulting to High Performance Sport NZ.
STEPHEN SMITH
Originally from County Kildare in Ireland, Stephen has been the injury rehabilitation coach to the Leinster squad since joining them in 2008. Stephen is interested in all areas of fitness, performance development, injury prevention and advanced rehabilitation.
He has performed extensive research into the area of injury prediction and the use of objective markers in injury rehabilitation.
Stephen is a past pupil of Cistercian College Roscrea, County Tipperary and holds an MSc in Football Rehabilitation from Edgehill University and a BSc (Hons) in Human Physiology, Sport & Exercise Rehabilitation from IT Carlow.
