Muldoon To Join Connacht’s ‘200 Cap’ Club

Connacht’s John Muldoon will earn his 200th cap for the province when he lines out against the Cardiff Blues on Friday, becoming the second player in Connacht’s history to reach this milestone (Michael Swift made his 200th appearance in September 2011 against Edinburgh).

Galway man John Muldoon joined the Connacht set-up in 2001 and made his senior debut for the province in 2004.

He was recently named as one of three Connacht club captains to lead the squad for 2013/14. The 30-year-old from Portumna has plenty of experience having captained Connacht for both the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons.

In his first year as skipper, Muldoon led Connacht to victories over then Heineken Cup champions Leinster and Amlin Challenge Cup winners Cardiff Blues league, along with helping his side to reach the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup where they lost narrowly to French outfit Toulon.

With three Ireland senior caps to his name, Muldoon was most recently called up to the national squad during last November’S GUINNESS Series.

The back rower’s appearance against Fiji in a non-cap international in Limerick was unfortunately cut short when he was forced off with a knee ligament injury.

The 6ft 2in, 108kg forward shows no sign of slowing down on the pitch and remains a regular fixture in the Connacht squad.

Speaking about his former team-mate, Connacht assistant coach Dan McFarland said: “John has played for Connacht Rugby and clubs within the province for a long time. His pride in Connacht and his country as well as his qualities as a back rower make him stand out as a leader. He has served his province superbly over those 200 caps.”

Muldoon himself commented: “It’s a great honour to join the 200 club with Swifty (Michael Swift). I’m so proud of where I’m from and being able to play for your province for this long has been amazing.

“A lot has changed at Connacht since I first started but, like every year, I’m really looking forward to the new season.”
