RTE To Show Climax Of League Title Race

RTE To Show Climax Of League Title Race

The RTE cameras will be at Dooradoyle and Castle Avenue on Easter Saturday as the final day of the thrilling Ulster Bank League Division 1A title race is broadcast live on television and online.

RTÉ have confirmed that they will be showing Old Belvedere’s trip to bottom side Garryowen as they chase their second Ulster Bank League crown in four seasons.

‘Belvo were champions for the first time in 2011 and Paul Cunningham’s current crop appear to have timed their run to perfection, overhauling long-time leaders Clontarf in the penultimate round.

The Dublin 4 outfit defeated Dolphin 21-15 last Saturday to go two points clear at the summit, taking advantage of Clontarf’s back-to-back defeats to UCD and Lansdowne.

Cunningham’s charges have their destiny in their own hands now as they look to pick up a final win of the campaign in Limerick.

However, Garryowen will want to mend their battered pride after being relegated from the top flight for the first time and ‘Belvo have to be wary of the wounded Light Blues.

“It doesn’t matter that they are already relegated. They have great pride and will be 100%. It’s going to be tough,” insisted Cunningham, who coached Garryowen to their last league title in 2007.

For their part, Clontarf know that all they can do now is get the best result possible at home to second-from-bottom Ballynahinch and hope that ‘Belvo slip up.

It all makes for a fascinating final day’s action. The Garryowen-Old Belvedere clash with be broadcast on RTÉ Two (www.rte.ie/live (worldwide coverage)), with live updates as they happen from Castle Avenue.

The station have requested a 2.35pm kick-off time for the live match so as this is the final round of fixtures, all matches in Division 1A next Saturday will kick off at 2.35pm.

Meanwhile, the Division 2A promotion/relegation play-off between Highfield and Thomond has been fixed for Woodleigh Park at 2.30pm next Saturday.

Kanturk, who were the runners-up in the Round Robin series, will face Instonians at Shaw’s Bridge in the Division 2B promotion/relegation play-off (kick-off 2.30pm).

If any of the play-off games are level at full-time, extra-time of 10 minutes each way will be played.
