The PRO12 Board today announced the appointment of Gerald Davies as their independent Chairman. Davies will succeed Andy Irvine who had chaired the Board since 2010.
Gerald Davies represented Wales in the 1960s and 1970s and was also selected for the British & Irish Lions in 1968 and again in 1971 when he was a key member of the victorious tour to New Zealand. He won 46 caps for his country and represented the Lions on 19 occasions (five Tests).
Having been manager of the Lions tour to South Africa in 2009, Davies then served as Chairman of the Lions Board from 2009 until 2014.
“It is an honour to be appointed Chairman of the PRO12,” he commented. “The GUINNESS PRO12 is going from strength to strength on and off the field with both TV audience and attendance increasing steadily year on year.
“119 internationals from the GUINNESS PRO12 represented their countries in the November internationals, showcasing the depth and quality of our competition.”
PRO12 Chief Executive John Feehan said: “It is a privilege to have Gerald Davies as our Chairman, his understanding of rugby is exceptional. Gerald embodies the rugby ethos and tradition while at the same time having extensive experience in the governance of our sport.
“I would like, on behalf of the Board, to thank Andy Irvine for his years of service as Chairman of the PRO12.”
