Skerries v Naas, Holmpatrick, Friday, September 11, 7.30pm

The opening games of the league are always difficult to judge. Last season’s form may be no barometer. Skerries finished third in this division last season thanks in no small part to notching up eight try-scoring bonus points.

Naas finished eight points and four places behind them. Under the floodlights at home, you would have to back the North County Dublin side for the win.

Corinthians v Queen’s University, Corinthian Park

The Galway side endured a tough season and were relegated from Division 1B with only three wins. They will hope to bounce back this term but it will be a tough job in what could be a tight division.

Queen’s University finished last season in sixth place and will aim to build on the six try-scoring bonuses they picked up.

Malone v Banbridge, Gibson Park

Malone dropped down from Division 1B last season while the Bann finished fourth in 2A. Who will have the measure of success this season? This Ulster derby promised to be a cracking start to the league for both sides.

Thomond v Cashel, Liam Fitzgerald Park

The sides met in the league last January and it was a tight affair played out in wintry conditions with the Tipperary club edging it 9-3.

They finished six points apart in the league standings as well and again it was Cashel ahead. With home and away matches this season, it will be interesting to see how this first round clash goes.
