Preview: The first ever floodlit Ulster Bank League match at College Park looks set to be a cracker as Dublin University host unbeaten St. Mary’s College in the city centre.
Trinity endured a difficult start to the season with back-to-back losses, but out-half Jack McDermott’s 24-point haul inspired them to a 39-21 bonus point victory over UL Bohemians last Saturday. Ex-Clontarf winger Max McFarland chipped in with a brace of tries.
However, discipline was a problem at times for the students in that game, and Tony Smeeth will be hoping for a much-improved defensive showing tonight – especially as St. Mary’s have already racked up 16 tries in three games.
Trinity beat Mary’s 14-10 in the Leinster Senior League Cup last month, but Peter Smyth’s side have really hit the ground running in the Ulster Bank League. Another strong performance from their well-drilled pack, including the talented lock pairing of Ciaran Ruddock and David O’Connor, could be key in determining the destination of these league points.
