Buccaneers Host ‘7s In The City’ In Athlone

‘7s in the City’ takes place at Dubarry Park, Athlone, this coming Saturday (May 21). This is the third year of the event which is hosted at Buccaneers RFC in the heart of Ireland. Smith’s Supervalu Athlone continues as title sponsors with further support from Athlone Towncentre and the Piano Bar.

Formerly Ireland’s only all female tournament, this year’s ‘7s in the City’ will also have a Men’s Open competition. Meanwhile, there will be competitions at senior and Under-18 levels for the Women’s and Girls sides.

A star-studded Vixens side won the main tournament last summer with an impressive Portlaoise squad taking the honours in the U-18 section.

Teams from three provinces have already entered for both competitions so it looks like ‘7s in the City’ is continuing to build on the promise of the previous two years’ events. Blackrock, Garda, Railway Union, Tullamore, Old Belvedere and CYM are among the senior sides in the Women’s Sevens, with Portlaoise’s ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ and Newport Vixens from Tipperary among those joining Buccaneers in the U-18s grade where the host club’s girls will be making their debut.

Breast Cancer Research is the designated charity of ‘7s in the City’. The tournament is organised mainly by Buccaneers Women’s team players and a super day is assured at the well-appointed venue that is easily accessed off the N6 motorway, which has full bar and dining facilities in the Bounty. Entry fee is €;200 per team with generous prizes on offer for the various winners.
