Galwegians Begin Search For New Head Coach

Galwegians RFC are seeking applications for the position of head coach for the 2016/17 season and beyond. The club will play in Ulster Bank League Division 1B next season.

This follows confirmation from the club that Matt Brown has stepped down from the head coach role for personal reasons after holding the position for the past two seasons. Brown’s assistant coach during this time, Connacht’s PRO12-winning captain John Muldoon, is also making way and not going forward onto the coaching ticket for next season.

Spokesman for the Galwegians Football Committee, Paul Casserly, said: “We would like to sincerely thank Matt and John for their hard work over the past two seasons to bring Galwegians RFC forward. We wish Matt all the best in his future career, and likewise to John who of course still has an enormous contribution to make to Connacht Rugby.”

In his first season as head coach, Brown, together with Muldoon, inherited a ‘Wegians team that was freshly promoted from Ulster Bank League Division 2A, where they made it back-to-back promotions by winning the Division 1B title in memorable style.

Last season, the Galway outfit were very competitive in Division 1A throughout the season, before faltering at the death which saw them relegated on the final day of the season. They also hosted the most exciting Ulster Bank Bateman Cup final in years before being overtaken by a late flurry from defending champions and cup specialists Cork Constitution.

Casserly added: “This represents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious coach. With a largely settled young and predominantly homegrown squad, our aim is to return to Division 1A next season to cement our place as the leading club in Connacht.”

Interested applicants should forward their CV to Paul Casserly via paulcasserly40@gmail.com.
