Naas Rugby Club have announced the signing of Fionn Carr for their upcoming Ulster Bank League campaign. For the first time in their history, Naas have earned promotion to Division 1B and the signing of Carr is a major boost for them.
Experienced winger Fionn Carr began his rugby with Naas Youths, before joining Newbridge College and subsequently he had spells with UCD and Blackrock College.
He was first capped for Ireland at Schools level, winning caps against France and Australia. An Under-19 cap against New Zealand followed before he made the Under-21 side. At that level he won ten caps including five at the World Cup, and he went on to win two Ireland ‘A’ caps against Canada and also against England at Bath in 2010.
He has enjoyed a tremendous professional career, winning 110 caps for Connacht, in addition to 38 with Leinster. Of course he was part of the Connacht squad that claimed the GUINNESS PRO12 title in superb fashion last season.
Michael Dempsey, Naas RFC’s director of rugby, said: “Naas RFC have been on a major upward curve in recent seasons and the firm objective is to continue in this fashion. The signing of a player like Fionn is an indication of this. He is a quality player, who will bring tremendous flair, professionalism and experience to the club.”
Carr, who turns 31 in December, added: “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Naas RFC for the season ahead. This is where it all started for me.
“I have followed the rise of the club through the ranks of the All-Ireland League with pride in recent seasons. I have now been given the chance to further their progress, and it is a challenge I’m looking forward to enormously.”
Naas, who are led by player-coach Johne Murphy, the former Munster, Leicester Tigers and Ireland ‘A’ back, begin their Ulster Bank League run with a home game against Galwegians on Saturday, September 17.
