WRWC 2017 ‘Captains’ Breakfast’ Celebrates Leadership In Rugby

Captains and vice-captains from the Women’s Rugby World Cup participating teams attended the ‘Captains Breakfast’ earlier today to celebrate leadership in the sport.

Joining them at Ardmore House in UCD were former captains of the game in attendance at WRWC 2017 who were able to share their experience of leading their teams in previous World Cups.

The event was hosted by World Rugby Women’s General Manager Katie Sadleir, who is driving forward the Women’s Rugby Development Plan over the next eight years and embraced the opportunity to bring so many inspirational players and former players together while the tournament is in Dublin.

“We wanted to acknowledge the amazing people who are participating in Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 and in particular, the leaders of these teams, by bringing everyone together. They are the ambassadors and role models in rugby who will influence future generations to join in and enjoy rugby,” she said.

“This is the start of forming a global Captains’ Network. It is a network of past, present and future players who will help drive the game forward.”

Also in attendance were representatives from Ernst & Young who are sponsors of the Women’s World Cup.  Kristy Ingram from EY talked about the initiatives they have in place to support athlete leadership development. Five Women’s rugby players in the past three years have participated in the EY Athlete Mentoring Programme.

The Women’s Rugby Plan is presently in consultation phase and will be presented to council for final approval in November. The plan for 2017-2025 aims to accelerate the global development of women in rugby.
