The IRFU is pleased to announce that 38 clubs, across all four provinces, will host our ‘Give It A Try’ Summer 2018 Programme to introduce girls aged 10-14 to rugby in a fun environment
The ‘Give It A Try’ Programme lasts for eight weeks with one training session per week in the chosen clubs. As the girls learn how to play rugby, they will get the opportunity to play matches against neighbouring clubs as well as coming together for the National ‘Give It A Try’ Festival in August.
All players will also receive a free training T-shirt, as well as getting to meet one of the Ireland Women’s team.
Speaking about how the programme ran last year in the club, Polly Murphy from Fethard RFC said: “We had an absolutely amazing time, training and encouraging lots of news members with the ‘Give It a Try’ Summer Programme. The girls loved every session.”
Cathal Spellman, coach at Loughrea RFC, highlighted the growth of girls rugby in the area as more and more girls look to give rugby a try – “It was a longstanding goal of Loughrea to establish girls rugby in our club. The ‘Give It A Try’ Programme allowed us to introduce 30 new girls to rugby in a fun and friendly environment,” he said.
“From this we were able to establish teams at the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-15 age-grades for the first time in our club’s history.”
