Ulster Promote Bright Prospect Kernohan To Academy Deal

Talented young back Angus Kernohan, who captained the Ireland Under-18 Sevens team last season and played for both the Ireland U-19s and U-20s, has been rewarded with a place in the Abbey Insurance Ulster Rugby Academy.

Angus Kernohan, who started the year in the sub-Academy, has been upgraded to a full Ulster Academy contract on the back of an impressive pre-season that saw him start both friendly fixtures versus Gloucester and Wasps, marking the latter with a late try.

The 19-year-old continued his summer form into the first round of the GUINNESS PRO14 last weekend where he made a notable impression off the bench to earn his first senior Ulster cap in the hard-fought 15-13 win over the Scarlets.

Kernohan began his rugby career with the minis at Ballymena RFC, before making a name for himself at Ballymena Academy where he played most of his rugby in midfield. Ireland Under-18 Schools, Ireland U-18 Sevens and U-19 and U-20 honours followed, and with Kernohan making the transition to the wing, he featured in six of the Ulster ‘A’ team’s seven British & Irish Cup ties last season.

He will now be hoping to follow in the footsteps of current senior players Matthew Rea, Tommy O’Hagan, Stuart McCloskey and Ross Kane, who all also joined the Ulster set-up at sub-Academy level.
