Women’s All-Ireland Cup Quarter Finals

The Women’s All-Ireland Cup steps up again this weekend as three more teams enter the fray with semi-final spots up for grabs.

Old Belvedere come into the competition at the quarter-final stage knowing a win on Saturday would see them make the semi-finals for the third year in a row – a record for the club. Standing in their way are a Blackrock side who warmed up with a 45-0 win at Shannon.

Blackrock trail their near neighbours by four points in the All-Ireland League table and have a game in hand. The sides have yet to meet at Stradbrook this season, with the game at Anglesea Road going 17-0 to Old Belvedere.

UL Bohemian and Railway Union both enjoyed byes in the first round but meet each other in Limerick in a repeat of last year’s final. The 2018 decider went Railway’s way on a 33-3 score line.

Only points difference separates them at the top of the All-Ireland League table, although Railway were full value for their 27-19 win at Park Avenue in December.

Galwegians boast a fine pedigree in this competition, with three titles in the last seven years. After a challenging trip to Tralee, Fraser Gow’s squad are off to Tullow where their provincial contingent will know the likes of Hilary Griffin – a starting out-half for Connacht in the 2018/2019 Interpros.

“As you move through the rounds of any knockout competition, the standard improves and Tullow are no different,” said Gow. “We know we’re going to have to be at our absolute best and it should be a great game to watch as well.”

St. Mary’s have been forced to concede their match against Suttonians which means the Sutton club advance to the semi finals following their win against Cooke in the opening round of the tournament.
