Conroy Collects 50th World Series Try In Edmonton

Jordan Conroy took his overall HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series try haul to 50 on an otherwise disappointing second day for Ireland in Edmonton.

Maintaining an average of five tries per tournament, it has taken Conroy just ten World Series events to become the first Irishman to reach the half-century mark.

The flying winger touched down against hosts Canada and Hong Kong today, adding to his scores against Jamaica and Great Britain during Ireland’s table-topping run through Pool C.

However, he final leg of the much-shortened 2021 World Series came to a frustrating close for Anthony Eddy’s men, who finished up eighth in Edmonton and sixth in the overall series.

In dramatic 14-12 loss to Canada, Irish hopes of reaching a second successive semi-final were ended by a last-gasp conversion. A fired-up USA then dished out a 19-0 defeat in the next round.

Injuries caught up with the squad for the second week running – curtailing coach James Topping’s options – and Ireland conceded late again in the 7th-8th place play-off, leaving Hong Kong to take a 21-14 victory.
