The IRFU U16 & U18 Girls 7s Interprovincial gets underway this weekend with the first of two days of action at the IRFU High Performance Centre.
Each competition features two teams from each province playing six games across the two weekends. Squads are not graded and with 12 players per squad, that amounts to 192 girls in competitive interprovincial action.
Both competitions culminate in a Cup Final on Saturday May 20th.
“These 7s tournaments are brilliant in terms of experience, rugby development and Talent ID,” says IRFU Women’s Development Manager Amanda Greensmith.
“At U16 level, you’d be seeing a lot of players putting on their provincial jersey for the first time while at U18 level you might have players trying to play their way into the Ireland U18 7s programme for the summer.”
Four players who’ll feature were part of the team which claimed bronze and equalled Ireland’s best ever finish at a Rugby Europe Under-18 Women’s Sevens Championship in 2022. (Robyn O’Connor, Molly Boote, Sarah McCormick, Katie Corrigan and Hannah Clarke) .
Of the 24 players in the Ireland U18 Women’s team (supported by PwC) that faced Wales in their final game at the 2023 U18 Six Nations Festival, 15 will be on show in 7s action at the High Performance Centre.
Greensmith says this tournament is another example of the pathway in action.
“Five of the Connacht players selected for these games were part of that Ireland squad that played Wales, so there’s great representation there.
“Munster have put a lot of work into their Schools cup competitions in the 15s game and if you take the last Junior Cup final as an example, you’ve got six players selected here that would have lined out from either St. Anne’s Community College in Clare or Colaiste Ide in Kerry.
We had seven of the Ulster squad down with us at the X Rugby 7s Schools Cup Final day with Enniskillen Royal Grammar. They’re here representing Enniskillen RFC as well so that shows the strong ties locally between clubs and schools.
Leinster alone have players from 18 different clubs and 9 different counties so again that shows the breadth of representation. We’re really looking forward to the next couple of weekends.”
