Ireland Sevens Squads Ready For SVNS Series Regular Season Finale In Singapore

The HSBC SVNS Series League winners and the top eight line-up for next month’s Grand Final in Madrid will be confirmed at the Singapore National Stadium, which is also playing host to its first Women’s Series tournament this weekend.

In the Men’s standings, Ireland sit second behind Argentina heading into the seventh and final round of regular season action.

James Topping’s side have been in outstanding form this season, most recently claiming bronze in Hong Kong, and head into Singapore with a shot at being crowned League winners.

Argentina hold an eight-point cushion over second-placed Ireland, but with an inferior points difference, Topping’s men need los Pumas Sevens to fail to qualify for the quarter-finals, and then progress to the semi-finals themselves if they are to claim the league title in Singapore.

Olympians Billy Dardis, Jordan Conroy and Jack Kelly all return to Ireland’s 13-man squad for Singapore, with the Harry McNulty-led side opening their campaign against Great Britain on Friday (kick-off 1.36pm local time/6.36am Irish time).

Shannon winger Josh Costello, a former Ireland underage international, is poised to make his Ireland Sevens debut. The 21-year-old was part of the Ireland Men’s Sevens Development side that played in Dubai in December.

The Ireland Women, meanwhile, are sitting seventh in the overall standings but have already assured themselves of a top eight finish to qualify for the Grand Final in Madrid.

Head coach Allan Temple-Jones welcomes Eve Higgins back to his squad after the centre helped Ireland to a third place finish in the Guinness Women’s Six Nations and qualification for next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup.

There is also a notable return to SVNS Series action for Ashleigh Orchard (née Baxter), almost five-and-a-half years after her last cap.

The 32-year-old, who gave birth to her daughter Arabella last August, has played 87 matches for Ireland on the Series circuit, and her return to the squad adds valuable experience as the team build towards Paris 2024.

Teenager Amy Larn is also in line for her SVNS Series debut, as the Ireland Women open their Singapore campaign against Canada on Friday morning (kick-off 11.44am local time/4.44am Irish time).
