Action from Day 2 of the Festival - Dante Kim
There were mixed fortunes for the Ireland U18 Women’s team on Day 2 of the Six Nations Festival with a four try win against Scotland and defeat by France in an error strewn second match
Amy McConkey opened the scoing for Ireland just two minutes in with a blistering break from the base of a ruck. Scotland scored on ten minutes and took the lead with the conversion making it 7-5 but Ireland continued to look the stronger side.
Ciara O’Donnell added Ireland’s second try as she powered her way over the Scottish line after the Irish backs brought them to within inches of the line. It wasn’t long before Diana Izekor worked her way over slipping one tackle to drive over for Ireland’s third try.
The fourth try came with thirty seconds left on the clock as a tap penalty by McConkey was worked through by Merisa Kiripati and Bronagh Boggan with a neat offload to Lily Byrne who showed great footwork to skip through to the Scottish line. Lani O’Donovan, who had a try ruled out for a double movement just minutes before, added the conversion and despite a late flurry by Scotland in search of a second score it finished 7-22 to Ireland.
Ireland’s tackling and intent could not be faulted in the second game of the day but both sides were guilty of multiple handling errors. France scored their first try with four minutes in the clock and added a second on twenty eight minutes.
In between Ireland worked hard and put serious pressure on France in the tackle but could not convert the pressure into points with the knock-on count creeping up. France had another late flurry in the dying moments but again there were a series of penalties and handling errors that saw the ball change hands several times before a forward pass ruled out a try and brought the final whistle with the score at France 14 Ireland 0.
Ireland conclude the Festival on Saturday against Wales with the match live on irishrugby+ at 12pm
