Soft Day Thank God: Wednesday Night In Belvo
A balmy late spring, early summer sort of evening, the touch flags flutter gently in the breeze. The swallows swooped low over the sun dappled pitches before nesting in the eaves of the clubhouse. As the first of the teams take to the pitch, the earliest sightings of Factor 50 sun cream are noted for reporting in the letters pages of the Irish Times…………..No wait something wrong with this picture……. This is Ireland in May after all
Okay so the rain drizzled down for some of the night but the spirits were high and the action on the pitch was fast and fun.
Our mixed social teams kicked off the action with wins for Swoop Unit, Butter’s All Stars and the KSN Redbacks. RTE’s rugby commentator Ryle Nugent turned out for the aptly named RTE Sports team and showed that he can ‘walk the walk’ as well as ‘talk the talk’.
The Intergroup game between O2 and Maple Lions was the subject of some early attempts to bribe the Venue Manager but when it was explained that no points were at stake they just got down to playing.
The two Vets leagues were evenly matched with some tight score lines and a couple of draws – including perennial rivals Lansdowne Legends and Vintage Rock – which should make calculating the end of season positions fun!
There wasn’t even an eyelid batted when it turned out that one of the two Greystones teams (Seagulls and Hawks) were filming the other ahead of their clash next week. It was felt that the camera man would never get the video off his mobile in time to do the analysis.
The second Intergroup friendly of the night saw the Hurricanes from our Vets league take on The Swifties from our Mixed Social in Belvo’s very own version of Compromise Rules.
The final round of games saw a replay of last season’s C1 Mixed Social Final as Slatterys took on Hoof Hearted. There was only a matter of points between them last season in two games and so it transpired again this season as Slattery’s won on the whistle by 13 – 12. The Titans and The Tagables also picked up wins on the night.
The post match discussions in the bar centred on future theme nights with a number of Vets appearing very keen on a Mamma Mia night! Watch This Space.
Thanks to all the teams and to our dedicated referees on the night – Tom, Robert, Aoife, Simon, Gary, Paul and Eamonn.
