Donnybrook To Host Ulster Bank Junior Cup Final
Donnybrook has been chosen as the venue for the Ulster Bank All-Ireland Junior Cup final between Ashbourne and Enniscorthy which will take place on Saturday, January 28 (kick-off 2.30pm).
Ashbourne themselves played host to last year’s Ulster Bank Junior Cup final which Enniscorthy won 23-7 against Instonians to secure their second title in three years.
The earlier years of this prestigious national competition saw the finals played at Lansdowne Road, Dubarry Park and Templeville Road, while in more recent seasons the trophy has been lifted at the home grounds of junior clubs Cill Dara, Coolmine, Portadown and Ashbourne.
Donnybrook, the home of Ulster Bank League clubs Old Wesley and Bective Rangers, will become the eighth different venue to host an All-Ireland Junior Cup decider.
First-time finalists Ashbourne made it to through to the January 28 showdown thanks to a hard-fought 20-19 semi-final win over Clogher Valley nine days ago, while man-of-the-match Tom Ryan’s late try secured Enniscorthy’s 34-26 victory away to DLSP and a place in their fourth Junior Cup final in five years.
Enniscorthy and Ashbourne met as recently as December 3 in Leinster Junior League Division 1A, the Wexford men coming from behind to win 28-19 in a seven-try thriller at Ross Road. ‘Scorthy also won 40-32 at Ashbourne in September.
