Hayes And O’Donovan To Continue As Shannon Coaches

Having ensured Shannon’s safety in Ulster Bank League Division 1B recently, the Limerick club have confirmed that Tom Hayes and David O’Donovan will continue to coach the senior squad for 2017/18.

Tom Hayes took over as head coach from Marcus Horan in early January, steadying the ship with a set of improved results which saw Shannon eventually claim eighth spot in the table and avoid relegation.

The Parish club ended the campaign with six league wins, including five victories over Galwegians, Old Wesley, UL Bohemians, UCC and Ballynahinch between January and March, with the two final rounds producing hard-earned losing bonus points against champions Buccaneers and Ballymena.

Fellow former Shannon player David O’Donovan, who only hung up his boots last May just a few months on from a record 200th All-Ireland League appearance, assisted Hayes during the second half of this season, and the club stalwart will continue as their backs coach for 2017/18.

A statement from Shannon RFC said: “We are excited to see what can be achieved under the guidance of Tom (head coach) and David (backs coach), a pair who need no introduction to members as their achievements and dedication to Shannon RFC over the years stands alone.

“As a club, we are already planning ahead for next year and are looking forward to seeing the squad put in a strong pre-season to hit the ground running for the coming season. We would like to wish both Tom and David the very best of luck.”
