Taoiseach To Present At Ireland’s RWC 2023 Bid To World Rugby Council

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD, a keen rugby supporter who attends many Ireland and Leinster rugby matches, will join Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll, IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne and Ireland 2023 Bid Chairman Dick Spring to deliver the key messages of Ireland’s bid, which include a unique Government and legislative-backed package of financial guarantees, which are the most secure and competitive ever delivered to World Rugby for its showpiece tournament.
 
Speaking in Belfast, the Taoiseach, who will host Women’s international stars for the official Women’s Rugby World Cup captains’ photocall at his Dublin office this Sunday, also confirmed his attendance and support at the Women’s Rugby World Cup final in Belfast later this month.
 
Mr. Varadkar is the first Government leader to publicly confirm his attendance at the London Rugby World Cup bid event in September.

Speaking in Belfast today, the Taoiseach said: “The joint work that we are currently engaged in, North and South, to bid for the Rugby World Cup in 2023 is hugely symbolic of the new relationship that exists on the island.

“I intend to travel to London in September for the next stage in Ireland’s bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023. With the co-operation I have seen to date between North and South, public and private, rugby and non-rugby sporting organisations, I am very hopeful of us landing the prize.

“And, I’d also like to wish the Ireland team well in their upcoming games in the Women’s Rugby World Cup which starts next Wednesday in UCD. I’m looking forward to being back in Belfast later this month for the final.”
