16th seeds at the last World Cup, Ireland secured a ninth place finish back then in San Francisco. Roll on four years and James Topping’s side – ranked ninth coming to Cape Town – have secured a prized podium finish.
A Sean Cribbin try drew them level with the newly-crowned World Series champions, before Terry Kennedy did likewise in the second half and then Harry McNulty crossed for a 13th-minute match winner.
