Already assured of their place in the Olympic quarter-finals, the Ireland Men’s Sevens team were pipped by New Zealand who finished top of Pool A in the Men’s Rugby Sevens tournament.
Tries from the in-form Zac Ward, and speedster Jordan Conroy, gave Ireland a 12-point half-time lead, before New Zealand replied with converted efforts from Leroy Carter and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black to take the spoils.
James Topping’s charges now turn their attention to a massive last-eight showdown with Fiji, the champions from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
They have a positive recent record against the Fijians, with HSBC SVNS Series wins in Perth and Vancouver earlier this year. Tonight’s game at the Stade de France kicks off at 10pm local time/9pm Irish time (live on RTÉ 2/BBC iPlayer & Red Button/Eurosport 2).
