Ireland Men Finish Fourth On Singapore Sevens Debut

After the 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ireland Men’s Sevens team enjoyed a belated debut at the Singapore Sevens over the weekend, mixing it again with the leading sides in the world.

James Topping’s charges matched their fourth place finish from Seville, picking up 15 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series points to climb above France into fifth overall.

Ireland made history with an unforgettable win over double Olympic champions Fiji, advancing as pool runners-up, and began day two with a well-judged Cup quarter-final victory over the USA.

Unfortunately luck was not on their side in two extremely tight games, a last-gasp New Zealand try denying them a place in their first ever World Series final. Australia pipped them by two points in the bronze final.

With IQ Rugby’s Matt McDonald and Chay Mullins becoming the latest World Series debutants, Ireland’s consistently strong performances bode well for the rest of the campaign, which continues next weekend in Vancouver.
