Hidden Disability Sunflower Scheme: Promoting Inclusiveness in Rugby

What is the Hidden Disability Sunflower Scheme?

Why It’s Important

Many disabilities are not immediately apparent, making it difficult for others to recognize and provide the necessary assistance. The sunflower symbol serves as a discreet signal for those who may need help.

The scheme fosters empathy and encourages the public to be more mindful and supportive of individuals with hidden disabilities.

By promoting the use of the sunflower symbol, organisations and communities can create a more inclusive environment, ensuring that everyone feels supported and understood.

The IRFU’s Commitment

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), in partnership with Energia, has joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme. This initiative aligns with the IRFU’s commitment to inclusivity, aiming to make rugby more accessible and welcoming for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

Training and Awareness

The IRFU has implemented training program to educate staff and volunteers about the scheme, ensuring they understand how to support individuals with hidden disabilities.

This training emphasises the importance of patience, understanding, and inclusivity in all aspects of rugby, from playing to spectating. To access the free training please follow this link: https://rise.articulate.com/share/DRjGUKzp_2iFq94OvRLYmy7JpQcatNYR#/

Benefits for Rugby Clubs

Rugby clubs across Ireland now have access to the Sunflower training and resources, enabling them to better support members with hidden disabilities. This initiative will help create a more inclusive and supportive environment within the rugby community.

The Hidden Disability Sunflower Scheme is a significant step towards inclusivity in rugby, helping to create a supportive environment for individuals with non-visible disabilities. The IRFU’s participation in this scheme underscores its commitment to making rugby accessible and welcoming for all.
