Pre-Match Quotes: Jamie Heaslip (Ireland) – “It’s been a while since I’ve played with Donnacha (Ryan) or Earlsy (Keith Earls). Donnacha brings a really strong work ethic both on and off the field, I don’t think he gets much credit for work he does off the field especially.

“He’s a really good operator around the lineout but you know with him on your team you’re going to get a guy that hits 20 to 40-plus rucks in a game. There’s a very good chance he’ll be in double figures with carries as well.

“And he’s going to get the guts of double figures in tackles as well, he gets through a lot of work and covers a lot of distance for a second row. And he’s just a hard, abrasive man – he’s one of those guys that has the ability to injure his own players throughout the week, so that was probably a downside of seeing Donnacha back around the training paddock!

“It’s great to have him around and I know he’s really excited about it, the chance to wear green again, the same with Earlsy.

“Earlsy’s pace, his footwork, he’s one of these players that can break open a team with his ability to line break. He’s pretty electric on the ball so I’m excited to see him as well. There’s a lot of guys who are really looking forward to just kicking off the season again.”

Mike Phillips (Wales) – “It has been tough going at the training camps. It was nice to get through it all and things are going well, but as I’m getting older the training is getting harder. The coaches have done as much as they can to give us the chance to improve. It’s a great environment to be in and we are all looking forward to being involved at the weekend.

“There are no friendlies in rugby and everyone wants game-time and everyone knows how important this game is. We know we are going to have to impress on the field and that’s what the game against Ireland is all about.

“Some players are nailed on for the final World Cup squad, but I’m one of the ones who has to impress with Rhys Webb, Gareth Davies and Lloyd Williams all battling for (scrum half) places. The competition for places runs throughout the squad and the management have been making us all room with our biggest rivals at the training camps. It’s very healthy competition and that’s what drives you on as a player.”
