Despite going 14-0 down the Ireland U-20s fought back to 14-12 at half time but could not get the edge on Wales at a rain soaked Rodney Parade on Friday night.
The hosts made an ideal start, earning a penalty try early on before Steff Emanuel showcased his pace, chasing down a loose ball and dotting down for their second. While Wales’ defence was put under pressure in the early stages, they held firm, twice repelling Ireland at close range with the help of the TMO.
Ireland gradually settled into the game. Henry Walker capitalised on a well-executed lineout move to get them on the scoreboard, and as half-time loomed, the visitors piled on the pressure. Their persistence paid off when Eoghan Smyth powered over just before the break, narrowing the gap to two points. With the momentum swinging in Ireland’s favour, the second half promised to be a thrilling affair.
Ireland threw everything at Wales in the second half, but the hosts stood strong, with Harry Beddall leading the charge with an incredible 34 tackles, repelling wave after wave of Irish attacks. The Welsh defence, marshalled by full-back Jack Woods, refused to break, forcing critical turnovers and preventing Ireland from crossing the line in the closing stages. Wales made a remarkable 228 tackles across the match.
The game’s defining moment came late when Harri Ford coolly slotted a penalty following a dominant scrum from the Welsh pack, extending their lead to 17-12. Ford added another penalty in the 78th minute to seal the win, taking the score to 20-12.
This victory marked Wales’ first back-to-back wins in five years and their first win over Ireland since 2018. It was a testament to their resilience and defensive discipline under coach Richard Whiffin. The team’s unwavering work ethic and key moments of pressure in crucial situations secured a well-earned and memorable triumph.
