A cap ceremony was the final part of the #Going4Gold7s programme at the Poppintree Youth Centre in Ballymun. The pilot programme run by the Ireland Men’s Sevens squad delivers a six-week Sevens rugby introductory course run in tandem with complimentary mental well-being modules delivered by Jigsaw – the youth mental health training and support group.
Speaking about the initiative Charlene O’Neill, Jigsaw Youth & Community Engagement, said: “One of our priorities is to support communities in promoting mental health so when we heard about the Going For Gold 7s programme it was a really good opportunity for us to work with the the IRFU.
One of the key things was to build each week around one of the key themes for mental health. For example week one was ‘GIVE’ and we really saw how they gave each other support and compliments and encouragement. It helps to break down the barriers around talking about mental health.
