Over one thousand girls are taking part in the the Give It A Try Summer 2018 programme at 38 clubs around Ireland. Irish Rugby TV went along to a session in Wicklow RFC to see how their 60 girls are getting on.
The Give It A Try sessions are aimed at girls aged 10 – 14 and for most it is their first taste of rugby. The emphasis is on fun and introducing the basic skills over the weeks to encourage more girls to get active and enjoy the sport.
Speaking about the session, Wicklow RFC coach Karl Birrell said: “We’re in week 4 this week so we are introducing them to contact and the basics of the tackle. The first few weeks were about ball handling skills and getitng them used to throwing a rugby ball around. For a lot of the girls this is their first time touching a rugby ball.”
There was also a surprise visit for the girls from Ireland international Sene Naoupu who said ” Lots of noise, fantastic enthusiasm and so many smiles. It is fantastic to see so many girls come out and Give It A Try here in Wicklow.”
